Summer Reading 2024

Summer at the Library | We’re SLO Curious!

June 7 – August 9, 2025

Calling all curious quails! Stop by your favorite County of San Luis Obispo Public Libraries branch to borrow books you love and to pick up your quail-riffic Summer Reading & Activities Guide. The Summer Reading Challenge and activities are free for all ages and abilities.

Read what you want, when you want, where you want.

Anything goes! Kids, teens, and adults read (or are read to) for at least five hours to earn a prize. Track your reading in your Summer Guide, then claim your prizes at your favorite library branch between June 7 and August 9.

The Quail Trail: A cabinet of curiosities.

Reptiles, bones, gadgets…and a fortune-telling quail? Curious and cool stuff is waiting for you at our 14 libraries this summer. Check out our Summer Guide and our events calendar to find something fun (and free!) to do with family and friends.

And don’t forget to save the date for our August 9 Back-to-School Extravaganza at the Cuesta College Cultural and Performing Arts Center featuring Taiko drumming, Mad Science, Touch-a-Truck, and more!

The Book Bag: Because you love books and SLO County!

Our 100% cotton SLO Curious tote is your gift for reading 20 hours. Have fun filling up your book bag with library stuff--We’ve got hundreds of thousands of books, movies, and things to borrow! Visit SLOLibrary.org to browse and request bestsellers, blockbusters, board games, and more.

More about Summer Reading

Do audiobooks count towards Summer Reading?

They sure do! So do cookbooks, short books, long books, comic books, picturebooks, poetry books, easy books, hard books…

Are there other prizes for reading besides the book bag?

Yep! Kids, teens, and adults are invited to spin our prize wheels (five hours of reading) to win stickers, bookmarks, and more. Ten hours of reading gets you a new book to keep. Track and rate your titles in your Summer Guide.

I’m out of town this summer. Can I still participate?

Yes! Download a Summer Guide at SLOLibrary.org and print the Reading Challenge to follow along. Visit us by August 9 to claim your prizes.

*Prizes available while supplies last.

Do I have to do the Quail Trail to win a prize?

Nope! The Quail Trail is a bonus activity. But we hope you’ll try to visit any (or all) of our libraries this summer- Each library has something cool, curious, or just plain weird to see!

Finishing the Quail Trail is optional and is not required for participation in the Summer Reading Challenge.
