The mission of the County of San Luis Obispo Public Libraries is to provide materials and services to people seeking knowledge, lifelong learning, and recreation, as well as to ensure that all patrons of the library may use those materials and services to the maximum extent possible.
The San Luis Obispo County Library was established in 1919 under authority of the County Free Library Act. The Library is a San Luis Obispo County department operating under the authority of the County Board of Supervisors. Today the library provides service to residents of 6 of the 7 incorporated cities and the unincorporated areas of San Luis Obispo County, a service area that extends over 3,000 square miles. The Library offers circulation of books, magazines, newspapers, government publications, and other special publications, and also offers downloadable media of all types.
