Internet Use Policy
Policy Adopted June 18, 1998

Page Reviewed and Updated : September, 2002

By using a San Luis Obispo City-County Library Public computer Internet workstation, you indicate that you understand and agree to abide by this policy as well as the San Luis Obsipo City-County Library General Usage Policy.

The mission of the San Luis Obispo City-County Library is to provide materials and services to people of San Luis Obispo county seeking lifelong learning and recreation. As an additional means of fulfilling this mission, the Library is providing direct public access to the information resources of the Internet.

The San Luis Obispo City-County Library provides access to the World Wide Web using graphical browsers at special computers in some branches. In order to use these workstations, users must present their current Black Gold Library System library card or current photo-ID.

The library does not provide electronic mail (e-mail) accounts or software. Access to e-mail, electronic news and discussion groups, and online chat on web-accessible servers is available. Patrons use these at their own risk.

In support of its mission "to preserve and encourage the free expression of ideas essential to an informed citizenry", the San Luis Obispo City-County Library fully endorses the principles documented in the Library Bill of Rights and Freedom to Read Statement of the American Library Association. The monitoring of a minor's use of the Internet, like other library materials and services, is the responsibility of the parent/legal guardian. Realizing there may be material available on the Internet that some parents may not consider appropriate for their children, the library requires that all individuals under the age of 18 and their parent or guardian have executed an Internet Use Agreement in order to receive Internet privileges. Forms for this purpose are available at all library circulation desks.

Almost anyone with a computer can make information available on the Internet. People and organizations may intentionally mis-represent themselves. The San Luis Obispo City-County Library has no control over the information you find. We cannot be held responsible for the content, quality, or accuracy of the information found.
