General Library Use Policy

Adopted May 24, 1994.

People using Library buildings and grounds, including customers and staff, have the right


To maintain these rights, the following rules will be enforced:

  1. Anyone found stealing or mutilating Library property will be prosecuted.

  2. Excessive noise, running, harassment of other persons, body odor constituting a nuisance, or behavior that disturbs library customers or staff, or that prevents others from using Library buildings and grounds, materials, or services are prohibited.
  3. No eating or drinking is allowed in public areas within Library buildings. Scheduled events ( within Library meeting rooms and elsewhere) are an exception to this rule.
  4. No smoking is allowed within any Library building.
  5. Sleeping is prohibited in the Library.
  6. Solicitation of any kind is prohibited in Library buildings. Solicitation on library grounds which unreasonably interferes with the right of others to use the Library, including access to entrances, is prohibited.
  7. When it interferes with the right of others to use the library, conducting for-profit business by meeting customers within the Library and using Library facilities/resources as a substitute for office space may be prohibited.
  8. When it interferes with the right of others to use the library, playing of games ( board, video, card etc.) may be prohibited.
  9. Animals, except handicapped aide animals, are not permitted.
  10. Children under six ( 6 ) years of age may not be left unattended in the Library.
  11. The Library reserves the right to limit the number of people who may sit together at study tables or carrels.
  12. The Library is not responsible for personal belongings and these items must not impede movement of others or be a safety hazard.
  13. Shoes and shirts are required to be worn at all times.


Sanctions for Violation

  1. People violating the Library Usage Policy will be warned once.

  2. People not heeding the warning will be asked to leave the Library.

  3. People who violate the Library Usage Policy and are asked to leave the library are welcome to return to the Library at a later as time as long as the Library Usage Policy is obeyed.

  4. Questions of interpretation and/or appeals of the Library Usage Policy should be communicated to the Library Director.
