Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes

The author fell in love with an old villa in the Tuscan hills and was delighted to find it for sale. She persuaded her boyfriend to join her and they had a wonderful time working with local craftsmen on the restoration. They took time to enjoy the local cuisine and to practice cooking. They had a merry time with their many houseguests. This is a book that makes one long for everything Italian.

Where the Heart Is by Billie Letts

Seventeen-year-old Novalee Nation, 7 months pregnant, is on her way to California with her boyfriend. He abandons her in a Wal-Mart in a small Oklahoma town. She lives in the store undiscovered until the birth of her baby. A kindly elderly woman that lives in a trailer takes her in. A tornado destroys the trailer and kills the woman who leaves her small estate to Novalee. With the help of her friends and the insurance money they build a small house where the trailer once stood. She learns photography to support herself. There are other interesting characters that enrich the story.
